Why gel rather than foam?
Kneeling on broken concrete for forty minutes during a building-clearance drill is where most knee pads reveal their weaknesses: pressure points migrate, foam bottoms out, and straps creep down at exactly the wrong moment. Gel behaves differently from foam under sustained load. Foam compresses and stays compressed, so after a few minutes on a hard floor you are kneeling on the shell. The decision is mostly made by the trouser. If yours has an internal knee-pad pocket, an insert is lighter and cannot slip. If it does not — or if you need protection you can take off between tasks — an external pad is the answer, and between the two external pads the Gel is the one to choose for sustained kneeling on hard surfaces.
How do you wear it correctly?
Centre the shell on the kneecap while standing, then fasten the quick-release buckles and take up the elastic upper strap until the pad is snug but not cutting off circulation. Walk a few steps and kneel once; if the shell rides down the shin, tighten the upper strap a notch rather than the lower buckle. A pad worn slightly high sits correctly when you kneel, because the knee draws it down into position. Take it off for long periods of walking or driving so the strap does not fatigue.
